Gold scam.

Gold scam.

Postby Sunder » Sun Feb 07, 2010 8:02 pm

Hello everyone,

As some of you may know, I've been selling gold for USD and have had the pleasure to do business with some of you. I'm posting this as a warning to anyone out there who may be looking to buy gold or sell as well.

Do not do business with the following person(s):

Kyle Corp/Travis Uo., ICQ: 468821183
Johnny, ICQ: 593302135

This is how their scam works. Basically this person has apparently been advertising very cheap gold and mass messaging many people via ICQ. When they get you hooked, you speak with them. When you begin talking with them, they will contact a legitimate gold seller pretending to be you. The scammer will give you that legitimate gold sellers email and tell you to send the money. They will then continue to impersonate you to the legit gold seller and say that the money should be sent. All that the legit gold seller sees is that money was received and believes that it was sent by the scammer. They meet the scammer in game, and give the gold expecting a smooth transaction, while the person who really sent the money doesn't get anything. So basically what happens is that one person sends money, the gold seller confirms, but gives it to the person impersonating the sender, and the sender gets nothing. Essentially it's playing a glorified middle man. A pretty simple scam when you think about it, but easy to fall for.

I will be the first to admit that this scam was used on me, however I ended up getting the money anyway and the sender of the money was the one who was punished. I contacted this sender and gave them the gold that they were looking for after figuring out what really happened. I don't mind taking the loss on this one as long as my reputation stays intact. I am simply trying to warn people on the whole thing, and to keep in mind if someone is mass sending you messages aggressively trying to get your attention, it's probably a scam.

Gold seller needs to confirm the email the payment was sent from.
If you don't put in your 2 cents, how can you expect change?

It might also be a good idea as a buyer to request the seller send you an email from their paypal to confirm it is their own. When I used to sell gold I would send a user a confirmation code which they had to speak to me in-game.

When I sold gold the buyer states in paypal notes that the payment is for UO gold. This prevents losers from trying to get their money back because paypal will not reverse money that was used to buy virtual items. Flappy had this happen to him. Once he gave the guy the gold the person went to paypal saying he did not get anything and was hoping for a payment reversal. I also took screenshots of every transaction and had the person confirming its them in game.

When did Paypal change?

When i was selling stuff in 2000 i got paypal reversed for around $200 and paypal said their policy didn't cover virtual items.

I'm sure he's a front for one of those gold broker sites. Most of the established ones can be trusted, but some of the newer ones should not be.

Sigh, I wish that I would read this forum earlier, I am the real victim of ICQ: 468821183

He had been advertising in Sonoma Shard and requested me to pay thru paypal to mbraud4. I think he did the exact same way Sunder mentioned. After I paid, he asked me for the name of my paypal account to verify the payment and as soon as I told him, no response though ICQ thereafter.

According to the "real" gold seller through paypal dispute mechanics, the seller had sent the gold to the buyer (middleman) through a vendor in-game.

Is there any way we could ask EA to track him down?

<I found this forum through a search in Google on his ICQ number>

After contacted the real seller, finally track the scammer down, the gold was transferred to him on Atlantic Shard and his detail is as follow:

Scammer ICQ (communicated with me)
ICQ: 468821183
Name: Matt Gregory (now changed to Emmy Matthews (Crystal Clear))
as mentioned by Sunder earlier in this post.

In addition, he also has another identity:

Scammer ICQ (communicated to the real seller and the gold was transferred to this account on Atlantic Shard)
ICQ: 589521327
Name: Kenny Willtz (Kendral Lighthorde), Male, 37, USA

Beware!!!
